Here is what we actually fit in bathrooms and wet rooms across the North West, and why timber never gets near a bath. The short version - Waterproof PVC or ABS shutters are the most durable bathroom window dressing we fit — fully moisture-proof, not just moisture-resistant. - We never fit MDF or real timber in a bathroom; both swell and delaminate in a room that stays humid. - Faux wood and aluminium Venetians, and PVC or specially coated roller fabrics, are the sensible blind alternatives. - Perfect Fit blinds work well on uPVC bathroom windows without drilling into the frame. - The blind or shutter is only half the answer — extractor fans and trickle vents have to be kept clear for either to last.Free home survey A bathroom is the hardest room in the house for a window covering. Every shower or bath sends the room from cold to saturated and back within twenty minutes, sometimes several times a day. Ordinary fabrics absorb that moisture, stay damp longer than the room does, and start to spot with mould at the hem within a season. Timber swells, warps and delaminates at the joints. Even fittings and brackets corrode faster in a room that never fully dries out between uses. None of this means a bathroom has to make do with a cheap vinyl blind or nothing at all. It means the product and the material have to be chosen for the room rather than for how it looks in a brochure. This guide covers what actually holds up long-term in a Rochdale, Manchester or Yorkshire bathroom — waterproof shutters, the right blind fabrics, Perfect Fit for uPVC frames, and the ventilation habits that protect whatever you fit, plus what it costs to do properly. ## Why bathrooms wreck ordinary window dressings Most rooms in a house sit within a fairly narrow humidity band. A bathroom does not. Run a shower for ten minutes and the air can go from 45% relative humidity to well over 90%, then drop again once the extractor clears it. That cycle happens daily, sometimes several times, and it is what causes the damage — not simply the presence of water. Fabric fibres absorb moisture from humid air even without direct splashing, and if a blind cannot dry out fully between uses, mould spores establish in the weave. You see it first as small black flecks along the bottom hem and inside the folds, which is exactly where a Roman blind or a folded roller sits when it is not in use. Splashback from a basin or a bath adds direct water contact on top, which ordinary polyester and cotton-blend fabrics simply were not made for. Wood suffers for a different reason. Timber is hygroscopic — it takes on and releases moisture constantly, and every cycle moves it slightly. In a bathroom that movement never settles, so joints open, paint or lacquer cracks at the stress points, and a louvre that once closed cleanly starts to bind or rattle within a year or two. ## Waterproof shutters: the primary recommendation For a bathroom window, our first recommendation is almost always a waterproof shutter made from PVC or ABS polymer rather than any wood-based material. These are engineered specifically for wet rooms: the panels are moulded rather than jointed from separate timber components, so there is no seam for water to work into and no grain to swell. A quality PVC shutter can sit directly behind a shower screen or above a bath and take direct splash without any long-term effect on the louvres, the frame or the tilt mechanism. They also give you everything a timber shutter gives you in terms of light control and privacy — full louvre tilt from fully open to fully closed, a clean fitted look in the reveal or on the face of the wall, and the option of a mid-rail to run the top and bottom independently, useful if you want privacy on the lower half of the window with light coming in above. The finish range is smaller than for real wood shutters — you are choosing from white and a handful of woodgrain-effect foils rather than a full stain palette — but in a bathroom that is rarely the deciding factor. MDF is compressed wood fibre held together with resin, and it has no defence against moisture at all — once damp gets past the paint film at an edge or a routed detail, the board swells permanently and never returns to its original dimension. In a North West bathroom that is not a risk, it is a certainty, and usually within the first year. Solid timber and timber-veneer shutters have the same underlying problem to a lesser degree. Even fully finished hardwood moves with humidity, and a bathroom's daily extremes accelerate that movement well beyond what the joinery is designed to tolerate. We fit a great deal of timber shutter elsewhere in the house — hallways, living rooms, bedrooms — because it looks and performs superbly there. Over a bath or shower, it is the wrong material regardless of finish quality, and we will say so on the survey rather than sell something that will fail. ## Faux wood and aluminium Venetians Where a shutter is not wanted, a Venetian blind is usually the next best bathroom option, but the material matters. Faux wood Venetians are moulded from a PVC composite rather than timber, giving the same slatted look and light control as a wood Venetian without any risk of warping or swelling. Aluminium Venetians go a step further on durability — they are completely unaffected by moisture and available in slimmer slat widths, which suits smaller bathroom windows well. Both wipe clean easily, which matters more in a bathroom than almost anywhere else in the house, since limescale spotting from splashed water shows up on slats faster than on a flat blind surface. Cord-operated versions are fine in most bathrooms; where small children use the room we recommend a cordless or wand-operated mechanism as standard. ## Roller blinds: fabric choice is everything A roller blind can work well in a bathroom, but only with the right fabric. Standard blackout and dimout fabrics have a foam or acrylic backing that holds water rather than shedding it, and they will mark and mould in exactly the conditions a bathroom produces. We specify either a PVC-coated fabric, which is fully wipeable and effectively waterproof, or one of the moisture-tolerant polyester weaves made specifically for kitchens and bathrooms, which resist mould growth and dry quickly between uses. Roller blinds are also the practical choice where a window sits directly above a bath or basin and there simply is not room for a shutter frame or Venetian headrail to project into the space. A close-fitted PVC roller keeps the whole assembly flat to the wall. ## Perfect Fit for uPVC bathroom windows Most modern bathroom windows are uPVC, and Perfect Fit is generally the neatest solution for them. The blind clips into a frame that fits inside the window beading with no drilling into the uPVC itself, which avoids compromising the frame's weatherproofing — a real consideration on a window that already deals with high internal humidity. Perfect Fit is available with pleated, roller or Venetian blind inserts, all in moisture-tolerant fabrics or aluminium slat, and the whole assembly tilts and turns with the window if it opens inward. It is a particularly good fit for rented properties and new-build bathrooms where the uPVC frame is still under warranty and the landlord or homeowner does not want anything fixed permanently to the frame. ## Privacy versus light on overlooked windows Bathroom windows are disproportionately overlooked — small, obscure-glazed, and often facing a neighbour's garden or a rear alley at close range. Shutters solve this cleanly because the louvre angle gives you graded control: fully closed for complete privacy, angled up for light with the sightline blocked, or fully open once obscure glass alone is doing the job after dark. A mid-rail shutter is particularly good here, letting you keep the top open for daylight while the bottom stays closed permanently for privacy at sink height. Blinds and Venetians give a coarser version of the same control — up, down, or slats tilted — which is usually enough for a bathroom used briefly rather than lived in, but if the window looks straight into a neighbour's kitchen or a passing footpath, a shutter is worth the extra outlay for the finer control alone. ## Ventilation, condensation and keeping any of this working Whatever you fit, it will only last if the room is ventilated properly, and this is the point most homeowners overlook. An extractor fan needs to run for a good ten to fifteen minutes after a shower, not switch off the moment the water stops, and a blind or shutter fitted directly over or beside the extractor outlet should never obstruct it. The same goes for trickle vents in the top of a uPVC frame — a blind or shutter fitted without checking vent position routinely ends up blocking the one thing designed to clear the humidity that threatens it. We check extractor position and trickle vent clearance on every bathroom survey and specify the fitting height and any cut-outs accordingly. It costs nothing extra and it is the difference between a shutter that still closes smoothly in ten years and one that starts binding within eighteen months because the room never properly dries out. ## Cleaning, mould prevention and what it costs Waterproof shutters and PVC or aluminium blinds need very little upkeep — a wipe with a damp cloth and mild detergent every few weeks keeps limescale spotting and soap residue from building up, and there is no fabric to hold mould spores in the first place. Where we do fit a fabric blind, a monthly wipe-down and leaving the blind raised occasionally to let the fabric dry fully will keep it performing for years rather than months.
