# Real wood vs faux wood shutters: which one, and where
Timber, composite and ABS shutters all have a place — the question is which one and in which room. Here is the honest comparison we give on every survey, and why MDF is never on the list.

Shutter marketing tends to present this as a simple upgrade decision — real wood is the premium option, faux wood is the budget one. That is not really how it works in practice. The right material depends on the room, the span of the louvres, the humidity, and how the panel will be finished, and getting it wrong shows up years later as a swollen bottom rail or a sagging louvre rather than as an immediate problem at fitting. We have spent enough years fitting shutters across Rochdale, Greater Manchester, Lancashire, West and South Yorkshire and Cheshire to know exactly where each material earns its keep and where it will let a customer down.

This guide sets out the real differences between hardwood, faux/composite and ABS or PVC shutters, why MDF has no place in any of them regardless of what it is marketed as, and how to choose sensibly room by room. It also covers weight and louvre span limits, finish durability, cost per square metre and what our 10-year guarantee actually covers on each material.

## The three materials, and the one we will not use
Real wood shutters we fit are made from basswood or paulownia — light, close-grained hardwoods chosen because they are strong for their weight, take paint and stain evenly, and are stable enough to be milled into fine louvres and narrow frames without warping. This is the material for a traditional look, a painted finish that needs to match woodwork elsewhere in the house, or a stain that shows the timber grain.

Faux wood, sometimes sold as composite, is a blend of engineered wood fibre and polymer, giving a product that looks and feels close to painted timber but with far greater resistance to moisture and temperature swings. ABS and PVC shutters are fully synthetic, moulded rather than milled, and give the highest resistance to water and steam of any option, though with less refinement in the finish and a smaller colour range.

MDF is not on this list, and it never will be on one of our quotes. Some manufacturers use MDF cores in budget shutter ranges because it machines cheaply and finishes smoothly straight out of the factory. In a dry, climate-controlled showroom that looks fine. In an actual North West home — with humidity swings between a cold morning and a hot shower, or a kitchen full of steam from cooking — MDF absorbs moisture at any cut edge or joint and swells. It does not shrink back when it dries out; it just gets slightly larger and slightly less square every cycle, until louvres bind, panels stick in their frames, and paint cracks along the swollen edges.

- —ABS/PVC: fully waterproof, best for wet rooms and heavy steam.

## What MDF shutter failure actually looks like
We get called out fairly regularly to survey shutters bought elsewhere, and the pattern with MDF products is consistent. It starts at the bottom rail, closest to the sill, where condensation collects on cold mornings — the panel swells by a millimetre or two, just enough that the louvre pins bind slightly and the tilt rod becomes stiff. Left another year, the frame itself picks up moisture where it meets the reveal, and the whole panel starts sticking when opened or closed.

Paint is usually the first visible sign, cracking in a fine line along any join or mitre as the substrate underneath moves independently of the painted surface. By the time a customer notices that, the swelling has usually been happening for a year or more, and there is no way to reverse it — the fibres have physically expanded and will not compress back down when the panel eventually dries.

This is not a manufacturing defect in the way a warranty claim usually works; it is the inherent behaviour of the material in a damp climate, which is exactly why we do not fit it in the first place regardless of what any supplier's brochure claims about moisture-resistant coatings.

## Weight and louvre span: why the material matters structurally
A shutter panel is not just a decorative surface — it is a working mechanical assembly, with a tilt rod moving dozens of louvres on pins set into a frame that has to stay square under its own weight for years. Wider louvres (89mm and above) and taller panels put more leverage on those pins and on the frame's corner joints, so the core material needs to be genuinely rigid rather than just cosmetically convincing.

Hardwood performs well across a wide range of spans because timber's natural stiffness increases with the grain running the length of the louvre. Composite panels are engineered to a consistent density throughout, so they behave predictably at wide spans too, though very large single panels sometimes need a mid-rail to keep the frame stable. ABS shutters, being moulded rather than machined, are generally kept to more modest panel sizes because the material has more flex than timber or composite at a comparable thickness.

On every survey we check the actual window dimensions against sensible louvre and panel sizing before recommending a material — a beautiful hardwood shutter specified with louvres too wide for the panel height will sag at the tilt rod within a couple of years, which is a specification error rather than a fault with the timber itself.

## Finish, colour and paint durability
Hardwood takes the widest range of finishes: painted in any RAL or matched colour, or stained to show the timber grain, which composite and ABS cannot replicate convincingly. If you want shutters to match existing woodwork, skirting or a specific paint colour used elsewhere in the house, hardwood is the only material that will genuinely match rather than approximate it.

Composite shutters come factory-finished in a smaller range of standard colours, almost always white or a close off-white, with the polymer content giving a harder, more scratch-resistant surface than painted timber. ABS shutters are moulded in colour throughout the material rather than painted on the surface, so scuffs and light scratches are far less visible, which matters in a busy bathroom or a family kitchen where a shutter gets knocked and wiped down regularly.

Where paint durability genuinely matters — a hallway with coats and bags brushing past, or a low-level shutter in reach of children — composite or ABS will outlast a painted hardwood finish, even though the hardwood looks better on day one.

## Humidity, bathrooms and kitchens
This is where the material choice has the biggest practical consequence. In a bathroom with a shower, humidity spikes rapidly and repeatedly, and any shutter fitted there needs to shrug that off without absorbing moisture. ABS or PVC shutters are fully waterproof and are what we specify for wet rooms and en suites as standard.

Kitchens sit somewhere in between — steam from cooking is intermittent rather than constant, and most kitchens have reasonable ventilation, so composite shutters usually perform well there, with ABS as the safer option directly above a hob or sink. Hardwood can be used in a kitchen with good extraction and away from direct steam, but we will flag the risk at survey rather than let a customer assume it behaves the same as a bathroom-grade product.

Bedrooms, living rooms and hallways carry no particular humidity risk beyond normal household condensation, which is where hardwood's finish advantages come without the moisture trade-off, making it the default recommendation for those rooms.

## Cost per square metre
We price all our shutters at £250 per square metre fully fitted, regardless of material, which surprises some customers who expect faux wood to be significantly cheaper than hardwood. In practice the material cost difference is smaller than people assume once you account for the fitting, laser measuring and finishing that goes into every installation, and pricing consistently means the material choice on a survey is genuinely about the room and the finish, not about steering a customer towards a margin.

Where cost does vary is in panel configuration — bifold tracks, larger louvre sizes and shaped panels for bay or arched windows add cost regardless of material, so a straightforward composite shutter on a small bathroom window can come in well under a large hardwood bifold installation across a bay window.

## Longevity and what our 10-year guarantee covers
Every shutter we fit, in any material, carries a 10-year guarantee. In practice this reflects genuine confidence in how each material behaves over that period when specified correctly for the room — hardwood in a stable, dry environment, composite where there is moderate humidity, and ABS wherever water and steam are a constant factor. The guarantee is one reason we spend time at survey establishing exactly how a room is used, rather than simply matching a shutter to a window measurement.

Longevity in practice comes down to matching material to environment rather than picking the most expensive option available. A hardwood shutter fitted in a bathroom, however well finished, will not outlast an ABS shutter fitted in the same room — and an ABS shutter fitted in a formal living room will look and feel wrong for the space even though it would happily last decades there.

## How to choose, room by room
As a working rule from our own surveys: living rooms, bedrooms and hallways suit hardwood for the finish and colour match; kitchens suit composite as the sensible middle ground, moving to ABS directly above a hob or sink; bathrooms and en suites suit ABS or PVC as standard; conservatories and garden rooms, which see both heat and humidity swings, suit composite or ABS over hardwood regardless of how tempting the timber look is.

Where a customer wants a consistent look running through several rooms with different humidity levels — a hallway into a kitchen, say — we will often specify composite throughout rather than mixing hardwood and ABS, since composite performs acceptably in both environments and keeps the finish uniform. The right answer always comes out of the free home survey rather than a fixed rule, because window size, orientation, ventilation and how a family actually uses the room all affect the recommendation.

### What is the difference between real wood and faux wood shutters?
+Real wood shutters are milled from a hardwood such as basswood or paulownia, giving the finest finish and the widest range of paint and stain colours. Faux wood, or composite, shutters are made from an engineered wood-fibre and polymer blend that looks similar but resists moisture and temperature swings far better, making it the sensible choice for kitchens and humid rooms.

### Why do you not offer MDF shutters?
+MDF absorbs moisture at any cut edge, and in North West humidity it swells permanently rather than shrinking back when it dries. Over a couple of years that shows up as sticking louvres, a binding tilt rod and cracked paint along the joints. We do not fit it in any room, regardless of how it is marketed by suppliers who use it in budget ranges.

### Are faux wood shutters as good as real wood?

For a living room or bedroom where you want a specific paint match or a stained timber look, real wood is the better choice. For a bathroom or kitchen, composite or ABS will outlast it.
