Overview

Straight answers before you commit.

What it is

Made-to-measure shutters are surveyed, drawn and manufactured to the precise opening of each individual window, including non-standard bays, arches, gables, raked sills and ultra-wide patio runs. Nothing comes off a shelf. Every stile, rail and louvre is cut and finished for the exact opening it covers.

Who it suits

Made-to-measure suits any homeowner whose windows are anything other than perfectly square and standard, period properties, bay windows, dormer rooms, loft conversions, extensions with raked ceilings, and bespoke new-builds with unusual glazing.

When to choose it

Commission made-to-measure shutters when you've outgrown the compromises of off-the-shelf blinds, gaps, sags, bulging fabric, mismatched panels across a bay. The right time is when you want the finish to belong to the architecture, not sit on top of it.

Why the survey matters

DIY measuring almost always fails on bay angles, arched heads and reveal depth. A 3° angle error on a five-panel bay creates a 25mm gap by the time it reaches the outer panels. We survey with digital measures and reveal gauges so the geometry is right before manufacture begins.

What happens when it's done badly

The cost of cutting corners.

Off-the-shelf shutters and 'made-to-order' kit assembly fail in the same places, every time. The result is a permanent installation that quietly disappoints for the next ten years.

Risks & consequences

  • Panel splits don't align with the window's mullions, visually jarring every time you walk past.
  • Bay-window shutters with the wrong angle pieces leave 5–15mm gaps where panels meet, leaking light and cold air.
  • Arched heads cut to a generic radius leave a stepped silhouette instead of a smooth curve.
  • Wide patio shutters without proper hinge spacing sag and bind within 18 months of fitting.

Common mistakes

  • Trusting customer-supplied measurements for any window with a bay, arch or angle.
  • Assuming all 'made-to-measure' offers are the same, many are nearest-50mm pre-cut frames.
  • Choosing panel configuration based on photos alone, not the window's natural divisions.
  • Specifying a tilt-rod style without considering louvre depth, hidden rods don't suit very small panels.

Our process

Five steps,
no surprises.

  1. 01

    Detailed survey

Digital measurement of every opening, with photos, reveal depth, sill condition and tile-line notes captured for the manufacturer.

  2. 02

    Configuration drawing

Panel splits, hinge positions and frame profile drawn and shown to you before order, so the finished look is signed off in advance.

  3. 03

    Custom manufacture

Each panel cut, jointed and finished to your specification. Hardwood frames use mortise-and-tenon joints for long-term stability.

  4. 04

    Precision install

Frames shimmed plumb in every plane. Louvres balanced, hinges set, hardware aligned. Most homes finished in a single visit.

  5. 05

    Final inspection

Every louvre tested, every panel adjusted, written guarantee issued and aftercare guidance left with you.

Benefits

What you actually get.

Perfect fit

Built to your opening, not the nearest stock size. No fillers, no battens, no visible gaps.

Architectural integrity

Panel splits aligned to mullions and transoms so the shutters feel part of the original window design.

Higher resale value

Bay-window plantation shutters are one of the most-requested features in Greater Manchester estate-agent listings.

Configurations no kit can match

Tracked shutters for patio doors, raked tops for gables, tier-on-tier for Victorian sashes, all handled in-house.

Honest material advice

We'll specify the cheaper material when it suits the room. You only pay for hardwood where hardwood matters.

One point of contact

Jake surveys, quotes and fits. The person who measures your home is the person responsible for the finished result.

Specification detail

The detail
most installers skip.

True made-to-measure means more than custom dimensions. It means choosing the right configuration, material and frame for the way each room is used.

Materials

Paulownia Plus hardwood

Our premium lightweight hardwood, beautifully smooth and stable across wide bay panels. The first choice for large openings.

Basswood hardwood

Strong, reliable and ideal for a flawless painted finish across full-house orders.

Pine softwood

Solid, sustainable softwood with natural grain — perfect for stained finishes in character properties.

Waterproof PVC

100% waterproof for bathrooms, en-suites and wet rooms where moisture would ruin hardwood.

Methods & engineering

Slat sizes (63 / 76 / 89mm)

Three louvre widths to suit the window — 63mm for traditional cottages, 76mm as the popular all-rounder, 89mm for wider, contemporary openings.

Tilt options

Internal (hidden) tilt for clean lines, centre tilt for the classic look, or off-set tilt where the rod sits to one side.

Frame types

L-frame as standard, Z-frame for reveal-fit on masonry openings, or decorative frames for period bays.

Finishes

Pure White, Silk White, Ivory, Light Oak, Dark Oak, Anthracite Grey, plus bespoke colour-match on hardwood.

Mortise-and-tenon stiles

Real joinery joints, not staples or dowels, for shutters that stay square for decades.

Mid-rail dividers

Independent operation of upper and lower louvres for street-facing rooms.

Variations we offer

  • Full-height single, double or quad panel configurations.
  • Tier-on-tier shutters for sash and double-hung windows.
  • Café-style shutters for kitchens, dining rooms and street-facing windows.
  • Solid panel (no louvre) for cottage and listed properties.
  • Tracked shutters for patio doors, walk-in wardrobes and room dividers.
  • Shaped specials, arches, gables, circles, angled bays, raked sills.

Where it applies

  • Victorian bay windows in Rochdale, Whalley Range and Didsbury.
  • Loft conversions with raked roof windows and dormer cheeks.
  • Patio doors and bi-fold openings up to 4m wide.
  • Listed cottages and barn conversions where solid panels suit the heritage character.
  • New-build estates with reveal depths under 60mm.
  • Conservatories with sloped or pitched glazing.

Residential vs commercial

Residential made-to-measure is about character and finish. Commercial made-to-measure (surgeries, salons, hotel suites) adds compliance, fire-retardant finishes, BS EN 13120 child-safety and durable hinges rated for thousands of daily operations.

FAQs

Your questions, answered.

Can you do shutters for a bay window?+

Yes, bay-window shutters are one of our most-requested configurations. We survey the bay angles, draw the panel splits, manufacture mitred frames and fit the entire run so it looks integrated rather than added-on.

What if my windows are an unusual shape?+

Arches, gables, circles, raked sills and angled tops are all handled in-house. Send a photo through the contact form and we'll tell you immediately whether it's a job for our standard service or a specialist shape.

How long does made-to-measure take?+

Surveyed in 7 days, quoted on the day. From order, our UK handcrafted shutters run 4–6 weeks; our international range runs 10–12 weeks. Shaped specials (arches, gables) can add 2 weeks.

Is made-to-measure more expensive than off-the-shelf?+

Surprisingly little, typically 8–15% more than nearest-size kit shutters. The difference is dramatic in finish and longevity. Plus there's no rework cost when the wrong-size kit doesn't fit.

Do you guarantee bespoke shapes?+

Yes. Every shutter we make and fit carries the same 10-year shutter warranty, regardless of shape or configuration.

Can I get a written quote without committing?+

Always. Every survey produces an itemised, written quote with no pressure and no obligation. Take the quote, compare it, come back when ready.

Will the shutters affect my window's operation?+

No. We specify frame profiles that allow casement, sash and tilt-and-turn windows to operate normally. We'll show you exactly how at survey.

Which areas do you cover?+

Greater Manchester, Yorkshire, Bolton, Sheffield, Liverpool and the surrounding North-West. Larger commercial projects considered further afield, call 01706 538274.
