Overview
Straight answers before you commit.
What it is
Wooden Venetian blinds are horizontal timber (or faux-wood) slats threaded on cords or coloured tapes that tilt for light control and lift for a clear view. They give the warm, natural look of shutters at a fraction of the cost, and work in almost any window.
Who it suits
Venetians suit living rooms, kitchens, bedrooms, home offices and bay windows. Real-wood ranges are ideal for dry rooms; waterproof faux-wood is the right choice for kitchens, utility rooms and bathrooms where steam and splashes are a factor.
When to choose it
Most clients choose Venetians when they want the wooden look of shutters but a faster, more affordable made-to-measure dressing, or when refitting a kitchen, bay window or whole house at once.
Why the survey matters
Off-the-shelf Venetians fail in the same ways every time: warped slats, dropped end caps, brackets pulled out of plaster. We measure to the millimetre, supply quality painted timber or moisture-resistant faux-wood, and fit on proper anchors so the blind operates smoothly for years.
Recent wooden Venetian installs

What happens when it's done badly
The cost of cutting corners.
Cheap kit-shop Venetians look fine for six months. After that, the problems are predictable.
Risks & consequences
- Real-wood slats fitted in kitchens or bathrooms warp and twist within a year as steam soaks the timber.
- Lightweight aluminium slats sold as 'wood-effect' dent on first knock and never sit flat again.
- Looped cords without proper child-safety devices breach BS EN 13120 in homes with under-15s.
- Brackets fixed into plaster instead of timber pull through, leaving the headrail sagging within months.
Common mistakes
- Ordering real wood for a steamy kitchen instead of waterproof faux-wood.
- Choosing 50mm slats in a small recess where 35mm would tilt and stack cleanly.
- Picking white tapes against an off-white wall, making the join look mismatched.
- Measuring the glass instead of the recess (or vice versa) and ending up with a blind that binds on the architrave.

Specification detail
The detail
most installers skip.
A Venetian blind is the sum of its slats, headrail, cords/tapes and brackets. Get any of those wrong and the blind looks tired in a year, get them right and it stays sharp for a decade.
Materials
Painted basswood (real wood)
Lightweight, stable hardwood slats with a smooth painted finish, the everyday choice for living rooms and bedrooms.
Stained / natural wood
Oak, walnut and natural-stain finishes that show the timber grain, ideal for period homes and warm interiors.
Waterproof faux-wood
PVC-based slats that look like painted wood but won't warp, ideal for kitchens, utilities and bathrooms.
Cotton ladder tapes
Decorative tapes in plain or contrasting colours that hide the lift cords and soften the slat lines.
Aluminium headrails & bottom bars
Powder-coated headrail and weighted bottom bar engineered to keep the blind hanging straight.
Methods & engineering
35mm slat installation
Best for smaller recess windows where 50mm slats would stack too tall when raised.
50mm slat installation
The everyday standard for living rooms, kitchens and bedrooms, a clean balance of view and privacy.
63mm slat installation
Wide slats for larger windows, giving a bolder, more architectural look closer to a plantation shutter.
Bay window sets
Separate blinds per bay section, sized and aligned so the slats track together when tilted.
Variations we offer
- Painted real-wood Venetians (white, off-white, grey, custom paint).
- Stained / natural-wood Venetians (oak, walnut, custom stain).
- Waterproof faux-wood Venetians for wet rooms.
- Venetians with decorative ladder tapes.
- Bay-window Venetian sets.
- Perfect Fit Venetians for tilt-and-turn / uPVC windows (no drilling).
Where it applies
- Living rooms and bedrooms wanting the wooden look without the shutter budget.
- Kitchens needing waterproof, wipe-clean slats above sinks and hobs.
- Bay windows where matching slats across sections matters.
- Home offices where tilt control beats glare without darkening the room.
- Period properties where stained timber suits original joinery.
- Bathrooms and utility rooms where faux-wood outlasts real timber.
Residential vs commercial
Residential Venetians are chosen by slat size, colour and tape. Commercial Venetians additionally need FR-rated finishes and contract-grade headrails, see our Commercial Blinds page for those specifications.
FAQs
Your questions, answered.
What's the difference between real wood and faux-wood Venetians?+
Real-wood slats (basswood) are lighter, warmer and take paint/stain beautifully, but they warp in steamy rooms. Faux-wood is PVC-based, slightly heavier, fully waterproof and visually almost identical, the right choice for kitchens, bathrooms and utility rooms.
Which slat size should I choose?+
35mm suits small recess windows, 50mm is the everyday standard for most rooms, 63mm gives a bolder, more architectural look on wider windows. Jake will recommend the right size at survey based on your window proportions.
Do you offer ladder tapes?+
Yes, plain and colour-matched cotton tapes are available across the wooden and faux-wood ranges. Tapes hide the lift cords and add a softer, more decorative feel.
Are wooden Venetian blinds child-safe?+
Yes, every Venetian we fit complies with BS EN 13120. Cord cleats, tensioners and breakaway connectors are fitted as standard.
Can you fit Venetian blinds in a bay window?+
Yes, each section of the bay gets its own made-to-measure blind, with slats aligned so they tilt and stack together.
Will Venetians work in my bathroom or kitchen?+
Yes, but we'd specify our waterproof faux-wood range rather than real timber, so the slats don't warp from steam.
What guarantee do you offer?+
3-year manufacturer warranty on slats, tapes, cords and mechanism, plus our own workmanship guarantee on the fitting.
How long do wooden Venetian blinds take to make and fit?+
Most orders are surveyed, manufactured and fitted within 2–4 weeks. Custom paint or stain finishes can add 1–2 weeks.
Which areas do you cover?+
Rochdale, Oldham, Littleborough, Norden, Manchester, Bolton, Bury, Sheffield, Liverpool and West Yorkshire.
